During the previous warm period, that would be the one that ended near the beginning of the last Ice Age, temperatures got warmer than they are now. Polar bear survived the last polar ice melt cause by that warming. There is no reason to believe they wont survive this one. There is something that is of concern. The shipping companies are discussing opening a sea lane through the Arctic Ocean. That could be a possible nightmare. Not only for polar bear, but for the whole Arctic system. I dont think they are saying that the Polar Bears numbers are dwindling now – and yes there are plenty of polar bears. What they are saying is that Global warming is happening so fast there that once the ice melts they will drop in number very fast, and that can cause extinction.
